Maddie's first purse... Oh how special this day was. 12 year old birthday party.

Maddie with me, Sara and Brooke in Central Park, NYC trip 2004

Maddie-AKA Magoo, Madmardigan, Ms Magoo, Madison, etc-has reached the pinnacle of teenage hood and is now 16, glorious 16. Oh, how my brain is aching with this realization. I can't believe my first-born is 16 and will soon be driving herself to all of her social, church and school activities. I feel as though it is the end of an era, which of course, it is. She will get to experience dating and all of the fun that entails. Dating-SCARY! Before I know it she will be going to her first school dance and then.. Ughh.. graduation, college... LIFE NEEDS TO SLOW DOWN A BIT!

To commemorate this fabulous day, I will tell you a few things I love about Maddie.

The first that comes to mind is she is a complete spaz that has no problem laughing at herself. There are probably a hundred stories I could tell of her and her "grace" deficits, but I choose to tell one that occurred just a couple of days ago. Maddie was out weeding, trying to earn some money to pay for a DJ at her sweet 16 party (don't ask me.. she is 16, what do you expect??). She was thoroughly disgusted with the dirt and weed juice she was experiencing, but she proceeded through her discomfort with a grimace that only a 16 year old girl can elicit. She had finished her job and was pushing the big garbage can up the hill, when disaster struck (as only disaster strikes when Maddie is around). You see, Maddie didn't put the lid back up in place before she started pushing the can up the hill. Picture, if you will, Maddie pushing with all of her 16 year old might and then stepping on the lid, which caused the can to fall towards her. Proceed with your mind film and see Maddie flop, face first, INSIDE of the garbage can filled with.. garbage and weed juice. Maddie inside the garbage can, weeds and garbage now all over the yard. Maddie freaking out because she finds a spider and potato bug in her hair. Maddie truly disturbed by this turn of events, but laughing at herself, despite her discomfort. This is a a typical day in the life of Maddie. She is so funny and we love to laugh at her, and with her.

Maddie is the queen of cash. This girl knows how to blow it. I wish I could say that she learned that from Todd, but unfortunately this is a trait I share with her. She loves clothes, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, purses, etc.. and can never keep cash on hand for very long. I won't forget (or forgive) anytime soon the time she lost 50 dollars in a matter of 5 minutes. She went into a store to try on clothes and somehow lost the money. Gone. So annoying. She is a cash deterent, a yin to the cash yang, a cash repellent if you will. I hope she figures this one out before she is 40...Maybe when she figures it out, she can teach me.

Maddie is smart. This girl has amazing test-taking skills (when she studies) and just got a 28 on her ACT which I think is awesome for her first time. Always on the honor roll, even when taking several honors courses and being busy with extracurricular activities. However, what she has in book smarts, she sometimes lacks in street smarts. She once tried to play what she called BIKE SOCCER. As she was riding her bike she spotted a soccer ball and thought it would be cool to try to bump the ball with her bike.. Maddie going fast, Maddie yelling at me to watch her play bike soccer, Me thinking "not such a good idea", Maddie hitting the ball and her bike tire actually going up on the ball, the ball rolling, Maddie and bike down. I will never forget it.

Maddie is a wonderful girl who I am so glad choose me as her mother (Yes, Maddie, you chose me!). She has been our guinea pig child who we have had to learn on and yet, she still loves us.

Beautiful inside and out. And 16. Can't believe it. Love you so much Maddie!

Happy 3rd, 4th and 5th of July

3rd of July- Maddie, the babies and I went shopping.  We went to the Sweet Tooth Fairy to order Maddie's cake for her sweet 16 birthday party and to purchase some cupcakes for our family party later.  Met up with extended family for a late lunch and then spent the afternoon at my sister-in-laws house playing badminton and volleyball, eating pizza and cupcakes and melons.

Brought the kids home and set up a fun bed on the trampoline so we could relax while watching for some fireworks.  I got the babies set up on the tramp with me--it was such a perfect night. And then of course, after 2 minutes, they got scared and I had to bring them and all of the bedding in.  So then we went in search of some fireworks, last minute.  We found a perfect spot to view the Riverton fireworks, about a block away, with a perfect view.  The kids loved them.  I know it is horrible, but I think it was the first time they actually went to fireworks and saw them in real life.  I wish I had pictures.

4th of July- Fast Sunday and then nap.  Then breaking of the fast with homemade tacos (the best).  Then traveling to Grandma Jeanne's for the weekly dinner and Funniest Home Videos. Love those crazy peeps.

July 5th- A beautiful afternoon so I went completely insane and decided to take the kids miniature golfing.  It was complete chaos and so wonderful.  I love my crazy psychotic children.  I am quite sure the thoroughly enjoyed themselves.  I need to rest a few months before I take them by myself again.  After our round, we went to dinner at Zupas (thus reinforcing the fact that I was temporarily insane).  Got some yardwork done and jumped on the trampoline with Luke (for about 2 weeks, Sadie refuses to jump on the trampoline because she is scared that the sprinklers are going to come on while she is jumping- it only happened once, but she is scarred for life, I'm afraid ).  What a great weekend!  Hope all my loved ones and friends had a great weekend too.

Don't you 'nore me!

This is a conversation that has occurred at my home about 3 dozen times in the past year.

Sadie screaming.. "Yuke is shooting me!"

Luke: "I'm not! I'm shooting your dinosaur!"

Me: "Luke don't shoot your sister or her dinosaur and Sadie quit screaming!"

(about 2.2 seconds pass of quiet)

Sadie: "Yuke is pointing his gun at me!"

Me: "Just ignore him."

Sadie (to Luke): "Yuke, I'm 'noring you!"

Luke (to me): crying, "Mom, Sadie says she's 'noring me!"

Sadie (to me): "Mom, what does 'noring mean??"

Me (to self): "Just 'nore them"

Rasmussen Rendevous at Bear River Lodge: Day 3 ATVing, Ice Cream & Swimmin'

Dinner (hot dogs and doritos) on the veranda...

This the grannie mobile. As you can see from this picture
Grandma and Grandpa are super excited for this adventure.
This was the part when Grandpa almost had a come-apart because
it was too much of a process for his red-head to deal with. Wearing a helmet, rules about seat belts, threats about tickets if not following rules, etc.. Too, too much.
He got much happier once we were on the trail.

Avery's latest accessory: vanilla and chocolate ice cream
Seriously, so cute.

Baby Jake and his second ice cream cone of the trip.
Isn't he super cute?!

Nice freakin' sunburn, genius! XOXO Ty!
P.S. nice nipple

Loving Matt's sunburn and Brett's farmers tan.

Jumping into the hot tub.

Day 3 of our adventure started with a gigantic breakfast- fresh fruit, bagels & cream cheese, eggs, toast, bacon, waffles, cold cereal, etc. We Rasmussens know how to eat (or should I say make ourselves sick)!

After breakfast, it was The day of the ATV. Mom and Dad had reserved 3 LARGE off-road vehicles for the family and with our 3 we had enough seats for EVERYONE (22 people) to go on a long family ride. It was the best time. Everyone smiling, babies falling asleep in their gigantic helmets, dirt on faces. The best was watching my Mom and Dad's vehicle with 4-5 grandchildren in it. THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE GREAT TIME, MA AND PA! We splashed through mud bogs and fought off mosquitoes when we stopped for a snack in a small meadow for some lunch. We got to see wildlife, even a bull moose. I hope everyone loved it as much as I did.

After our 5 hour ride, Dad treated everyone to an ice cream cone from the small store on the lodge property. We figured we were all covered with dirt, what was the harm in a little bit of ice cream too. The kids were soon covered in it and that was fun to watch.

After ice cream, we decided to swim for a bit in the pool. Unfortunately, it was only a bit, because we hadn't been in the water for very long when a concerned-looking staff member hustled us out because they had seen some lightning on a nearby ridge. So we went back to the lodge and BBQ'd the Famous Rasmussen chicken and watched an incredible sunset. Somewhere in the schedule of that day I believe we took a glorious late afternoon nap. Wonderful! Watched some movies, played some games, the girls got their nails painted by Aunt Kim. The only thing missing was Jenell and her pregnant belly. We missed you!

Rasmussen Rendevous at Bear River Lodge: Day 4- Provo River Falls Hike

The Six Ashby's at the Rass Reunion

Loads and loads of estrogen
in such a small area could be dangerous
The boys in the middle of the river-
in the middle of a waterfall in the middle of the river.
This much "good judgement" in one area
could be dangerous.

Provo River Waterfall

WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!

If you are not a Rasmussen, or related to a Rasmussen, you may find this post very boring. You have been warned!!

I took 792 (yes, I am serious) pictures while at our reunion, dozens of which were fabulous.

I am posting a few of my favorites. I am so grateful to my Rass Family for a wonderful weekend of food, dirt, ATV's, swimming, food, picture-taking, hiking, sleeping, chasing toddlers & babies, watching movies, family debates, laughing, eating ice-cream, being eaten by bugs and applying aloe vera to sunburns (except for me and my toddlers- no pink/red skin for us!!)

We have a great family and lots of fun together. I was so proud of my Dad for attending our reunion.. You have to know "Grandpa Red" to know how much he HATES leaving home and traveling. I will always remember the summer we were planning to go to Disneyland. I was about 12 years old and was so excited because we had never been to California, or anywherereally-well, except to the Duchesne County Fair. The morning of our trip arrived and instead of the busy hum of a family getting ready for an exciting trip, there was a heavy cloud of doom in the air. Dad was not speaking, nor was he packing. He was busying himself with a myriad of tasks, none relating to Mickey Mouse or beachwear. My mom was looking anxious and informed us that we were not to ask "when are we leaving?" nor could we act excited about our trip, thus putting pressure on a father who was near a nervous breakdown. She secretly got us all packed up, never once disturbing my father as he took a leisurely bubble bath and then started repairing fence. We all (minus my absentee father) loaded up in the old suburban, still not quite sure if we were really going to get to go to California or not. We sat there for a few hours until Dad decided he was done torturing us and then he climbed in the drivers seat, said "Did you get everything?" and away we went. We got about a mile or so from home, when we ran out of gas. No. No. I am not kidding. Can you imagine the horror?? Actually, unless you know my dad, you can not possibly imagine the horror. Despite the rough start, we did eventually make it to Disneyland. I remember riding in the back of the suburban with my dad, windows rolled down, traveling across the endless desert and entertaining myself not with a handheld electronic device, but with a magic marker my mom had found in her purse (another blog post all together!). My dad became my personal work of art as I drew pictures all over every square inch of exposed skin. By Barstow, he looked like some creepy weirded-out tatooed man. We ended up having a great trip-- it was awesome. And he is awesome, despite his cantakerous ways when it comes to vacations and traveling. Thanks Mom and Dad for the wonderful vacation and endless love and patience!

Sadie mid-leap
We have to have at least 13 jumps from high rocks when we are hiking
or Todd and the "Todd"lers are not happy.

Dynamic Duo...

Sadie being the rest of the tree

Super cheesy!

My favorite picture of all 792...
Love my beautiful girls!

This is the Dennis the Menace face..
That means "I just threw something and hopefully
you will be charmed by this smile and I won't get in trouble"
Of course, he didn't get in trouble
(NOT because I am charmed by his smile, which I am)
it was because
it was a rock he threw into the river

My two little adventurers!
If you squint it looks like Pocahontas and her illegitimate 1/2 white child
down by the river washing off for their dinner of bison jerky

Again with the jumping from high rocks.
Yes, Todd looks very "special"
That's why the girls love him...

Sadie presented me with several bouquets of wildflowers

Grandpa Red, Grandma Farm and the Lukester

Again with the rock throwing..

Future Florists of America
Dandelions anyone??
